Carl was a “gentle man” in the very truest sense of the word. He was a talented and supportive colleague and an even better friend. I will greatly miss our more recent random calls to catch up on each other’s lives and know that his love for the outdoors, music, current events, and life in general was only exceeded by his love for his children of whom he was exceedingly proud. His warmth, candor, wry wit, and courage will be missed. Rest in peace, my friend.

I did not know Carl for many years. We did not meet until after he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. He was looking for help planting his spring bulbs in the fall of 2021, as he didn't have the energy. We barely got them in the ground before the snow fell and the ground was frozen. This past year, he was again looking for help in the gardens. I am glad I was able to make time to help him keep his gardens up to his standards. I'm especially happy that he was able to see his Japanese Maple planted to his liking this fall. When I drive by and see it flourishing, I will think of Carl sitting in his chair by the window, watching the birds and listening to the radio. Although my relationship with Carl was brief, I feel fortunate to have known him for that short time. He was charming, generous and entertaining. I found that I was drawn to his gardens with the hope that we might have an interesting conversation about where his travels had taken him during his lifetime. He was so adamant that he would attend his Katharine's wedding, I was convinced. I'm surprised and saddened to hear he is gone. I will miss you terribly Carl, I hope your family will find comfort in their memories.

One of my fonder memories with Carl, while in our late 'teens', was exploring the smaller shops in Portland, Maine, picking our choice of antiques in some, a favorite painting in another. Our ultimate destination was St. Joseph the Provider, a thrift shop where we were just apt to find an affordable treasure-but then we stumbled upon The Candle Shop, one of the early establishments on Exchange St. We stepped through its door and were both seized, overwhelmed by a gloriously resonate, ethereal music pervading every nook and cranny, all emitting from a large, beautiful, ornately painted German polyphon. We were mesmerized. It filled our hearts and we laughed with absolute joy.
Forty seven years passed before we reconnected. Carl was already five years into his journey with cancer, yet still mustered together his noetic, kind, joyous spirit. He loved his "Rockport castle" filled with books, inherited family furniture, mementos (feathers, rocks, driftwood), plants, paintings--everything organized and readily available; the niche where his chair was positioned so he could sit for hours observing the wide variety of birds fluttering and feasting in their established order the numerous and consistently filled feeders, his beloved Story by his side.
Carl's voice and face glowed as he narrated his life stories and family adventures recorded in pictures throughout the years, all set to music, retaining memories. We reminisced, laughed about our frugalness, gathered seaweed for our gardens, savored a salmon supper, proclaimed our absolute love for naps--humor his exclamation point. Spirit soulmates.
A man, a veteran who loved life, dinner with friends, who wrestled with the important life
questions and was determined to make the most of every day, even when "rough sledding". Let the wild crows and Willy Nelson hair fly. Love you always, Carl. Jen
