Frank, your personality was larger than life, and your contribution to my life was immeasurable. So many memories: my earliest memories were your taking me on long hikes through the woods and down to the Cape Cod Bay, teaching me how to ice skate on our pond, rescuing me when I climbed trees way too high, jumping in the leaves in the crisp autumn, New England Air from “unsafe” heights. You taught me how to drive in a red Plymouth on Mary Dunn Road when I was 11 years old because you thought it was about time! Thank you for your example of true patriotism and love of country. Who else tried to re-enlist after 9-11 when they were over 50 years old?
You always told me, “Verna, you don’t fit the mold, and that’s good.” You encouraged me when I was treated unkindly, but you did not coddle me. You taught me to believe in great possibilities. You were the quintessential and very rare example of unconditional loyalty, love, and generosity, both when times were good and when times were not good at all. Thank you for bringing the same spirit to relationships with my children, which is perhaps your greatest contribution to me. Thank you for being a best, lifelong friend. Fair winds and following seas. You are greatly missed.
