Obituary of Michael David Orne

Michael David Orne, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at home on November 22, 2024, at the age of 73, following a courageous battle with illness. His life, spanning May 15, 1951, to November 22, 2024, was a testament to his resilience, ingenuity, and unwavering devotion to his family and community.

Born in Rockland, Maine, to William S. Sr. and Christine Upham Orne of Monhegan Island, Mike's early years were shaped by the idyllic island life he shared with his brother, Billy. The family's relocation to Washington following his father's untimely death brought new challenges and a strengthened bond with his mother and younger sister, Ellen. At 18, Mike answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the US Navy. His four years of service not only broadened his horizons through international travel – a passion reflected in his cherished coin collection – but also provided him with the valuable trade of electrician, a skill he would utilize throughout his career.

Upon returning home, Mike embarked on a five-decade career with the Maine Department of Transportation (DOT), becoming an indispensable member of the bridge repair team. His leadership, expertise, and exceptional patience earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues. Even after his illness forced his retirement, his dedication and contributions remained legendary within the DOT.

Mike's quiet strength and gentle nature were hallmarks of his character. A patient listener and a resourceful problem-solver, he preferred the challenge of repairing a broken item to simply replacing it – a trait that extended to his memorable first date with Dale, his wife of 47 years, where "true buckets" served as innovative seating. Their enduring love story blossomed in Friendship, Maine, where they raised their daughters, Marie and Melissa. Their life together was filled with simple joys, including shared dances with friends Janice and Phil in Washington, a testament to Mike's surprisingly skillful dancing abilities.

Even during his final months, battling a terminal illness, Mike's love for lobster remained undiminished. His daughters, Marie and Melissa, faithfully brought him his favorite treats, including lobster and crab rolls, providing comfort and connection during a difficult time. His final days were spent surrounded by the love of his family, holding his wife Dale's hand, a poignant ending to their beautiful life together. His passing, while deeply saddening, leaves behind a legacy of love, ingenuity, and unwavering dedication.

Mike is survived by his devoted wife, Dale Orne; his sister, Ellen (Wellman) Jorgensen; his children, David Orne, Christie (Orne) Rudin, Marie and son-in-law Matt Turner, and Melissa Orne; his grandchildren, Brandon, Jeremy, Mark Orne, Chloe Winchenbach, Wesley Turner, Reanna Stoutt, DJ Orne, and Isaiah Orne; his great-granddaughter, Summer Collamore; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, stepfather Estern Wellman who passed in 2010,  and brother, William S. Orne Jr. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

There will be a celebration of life at Friendship Hahn Community Center in Friendship, Maine on Monday, December 2nd 2024 at 1 pm.
