Dear Nancy,
We are thinking of you and are so saddened to learn of Steve's passing.
We will miss his humor, our poker games, nights at the wharf and Steve eating the parts of the lobster that neither of us ate!!! Ted will miss his ping pong battles with both Steve & Peter.
Our thoughts and prayers.
Love,
Ted & Kathy Fleming

Q: What 3 words best describe Steven and why?
A: Constantly an enquirer.
He was always an example of someone who would have benefited enormously from the gains of higher education, and in another era who knows what he might have become ? He was greatly curious and ready to learn. At the same time he wore his own not inconsiderable learning lightly and was always ready to make connections and pass on insights to those of us who would benefit.
To such wisdom was added kindness and a perception about the state of things from which the rest of us greatly gained. Add to that his skills as a craftsman and the total picture is of is of someone we were all blessed to know.
I already miss him a lot. We all shall.

We have great memories of our visits to Maine, sharing a glass (or two!) of wine, hearing about the latest adventures, relaxing on the deck and just waiting for the next bird to arrive at the feeders.

Steven was such a kind, compassionate, sweet and gentle man. I met him at Cove's Edge where he and my Dad (Sherman Gifford) became the best of friends. Steven's smile lit up the room and we came to love him as one of our own. I'm sure he and my Dad are raising a ruckus now that they are Double Trouble reunited! Steven will be missed and I'm so very sorry for your loss.

My Stepdad loved to tell tales - some of which definitely qualified as “tall”. I think my most favorite ever though was the one where he swore up and down that he’d “shot a rat in the head but it didn’t die!” This allegedly occurred in the kitchen of Steve's house on Friendship Road in Waldoboro. The Great Rat Capers (there were others) happened long before mom and Steve married and before our family moved into the house where I grew up and came to call home.
I can’t think of a more aptly named road for a guy like Steve to have settled on. Friendship Road, to say that Steve was a people person could be the understatement of the century. He made friends instantly with anyone and everyone. Real friends, lifelong friends, and he made them effortlessly. He was always glad to see you.
When I think of friends, or tales, or throwing axes at our target in the backyard, or charging up a hill in full reenacting gear at a historic battleground or sitting by the Mediterranean Sea having a glass of wine in the sun with friends, I’ll think of my Stepdad.
Bon voyage Steve! I know wherever you’ve ended up your making friends and telling tales.

Q: How did you meet Steven?
A: My family met Steven at Coves Edge Nursing Home as my father, Sherman Gifford , was also a resident there for 11 months. They were best friends, known affectionately as "double trouble ". We loved Steven like family and continued to visit him after Dad's death this past father's day. His smile, quick wit, and loving nature will live on in our hearts forever! Steven was by my Dad's side every day and night talking, crying, and holding his hand . He was always there for us too and we will never forget him! He was and is a true angel and our hearts are broken at the loss of this special man. To Nancy and the rest of his family, our heartfelt condolences, may he rest in peace.
