Obituary of Fred Kervin Lawrence
Fred “Sonny” Kervin Lawrence, the first-born son to Roger and Katherine Lawrence, passed away on January 10, 2024, at EMMC after a period of failing health. Born in Topeka, Kansas, on June 20, 1962, Fred spent most of his childhood moving before his family settled in Machias, Maine, upon his father’s
retirement from the Air Force in 1975.
Graduating from Machias Memorial High School in 1980, Fred enlisted in the United States Navy, serving a total of 16 years between active duty and reserves. A lifelong learner, he enrolled at the University of Maine at Machias and earned a bachelor's degree in 1993. His career in technology eventually allowed him to move back to his roots in Downeast Maine. He greatly enjoyed facilitating beginner computer classes for seniors in his later years.
Fred wasn’t afraid to try new things and throughout his adult life, he enjoyed a myriad of hobbies, including motorcycling, windsurfing, practicing karate, and playing Dungeons and Dragons. He was an avid reader his entire life and enjoyed sharing his insights with those he cared about. Fred enjoyed cooking and sharing his creations with others; in recent years he enjoyed preparing dishes for potlucks at his apartment building.
Fred was predeceased by both his father, Roger, and his younger brother, Shawn Lawrence.
Fred is survived by his mother, Katherine (Kay) of Machias; sisters Beth Lawrence of Jonesboro and Kathy Schoppee of Machias; niece Danielle Love (Grant) of Richmond NH and their children; nephews Thomas “TJ” Holland (Amanda) and Mark Moore (Mandy) and their children; his paternal Aunt Laurie Newcomb of Hopkinsville, KY; and Stan Pettegrow of Orrington, Fred’s longest and dearest friend.
Final arrangements are provided by Direct Cremation of Maine in Belfast. Honoring Fred’s wishes, he will be buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Lewiston in the spring next to his father.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may donate to the Make-a-Wish Foundation in Fred’s name.
