Obituary of Paul James Doherty
Paul J. Doherty, a long time resident of Wells, ME, passed away at York Hospital from pneumonia on January 1, 2024, surrounded by his family.
Paul, son of the late George and Joanna Doherty, was born November 13, 1940 in Boston, MA. He grew up in Savin Hill, Dorchester, attending Boston Public Schools before enlisting in the United States Air Force at the age of 17. During his 30 years in the military, he served two tours in Vietnam and was stationed in various locations across the world to include Tachikawa, Japan, Lefkada, Greece and numerous U.S. bases.
While working at Dow Air Force base in Bangor, Maine he met his soulmate and love of his life, Jeanette Estey. They married on September 14, 1968 and moved to Fort Worth, Texas where they had their two daughters Erin and Shannon. He spent the last 11 years of his military service at Pease Air Force Base in Portsmouth, NH. After retiring from the military, he spent the next 20 years working at Spencer Press and then went on to purchase a deli in York Beach, ME and attended culinary school.
Paul was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was an avid reader, gardener, enjoyed sudoku & crossword puzzles and riding around the neighborhood in his golf cart visiting friends. He had a fun-loving soul and kept everyone he met laughing and on their toes with his jokes and pranks, earning the moniker "Mayor of Wells Highlands".
Paul was predeceased by his parents and his brother Richard Doherty. He is survived by his wife Jeanette Doherty of 55 yrs; daughter Erin Radford and her husband Ken of Farmington, NH; daughter Shannon Doherty of York, ME; adopted son Sean Reynolds of Center Conway, NH; his only grandchild John Radford; his sister Joanne Condon and her husband Dick; several nieces, cousins and numerous friends & neighbors that he considered family.
Services will be held at a later date at the Southern Maine Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Springvale, ME.
