William “Bill” Garnett, 94 yrs., passed away Aug. 20, 2023, after a brief illness.
Bill was born on Jan. 28, 1929, in the Masons Bay District of Jonesport, on the very land he lived on for most of his life. The 6th of 9 children born to Helen (Smith) Garnett and Clarence Garnett Sr., it’s been said that he was born a century too late; as he preferred horses, working with his hands, deer hunting, and a slower pace of life. Over the years he worked at a variety of jobs such as blueberrying, mowing lawns, and cutting wood, but he ultimately fancied himself a carpenter.
Bill proudly served his country with the US Army during the Korean Conflict.
Bill is survived by his wife of 67 years., Margarete Dobbins Garnett, children Joyce (Robert) Pittman, Jane (Dean) McGray, Joline (Mitchell) Bowers, Glenn (Vicki) Garnett, Julia (Floyd) Crowley; grandchildren Nicki, Anita, Danielle, Ryan, Corey, Saydee, William, Kacey, and Kristin; great-grandchildren Kai, Alyssa, Conner, Lauren, Willow, Naomi, Wesley, Brooklyn, Hunter, Easton, Jaren, Rosie and siblings, Robert, Neil and Clarence Jr.
He was predeceased by his parents, son Gerald, granddaughter Holly, siblings, Fern, Hazel, Leona, and Greta; as well as his brother and best friend Merton.
It is with great appreciation that Bill’s family would like to thank the staff at Down East Community Hospital, Beacon Hospice, and Maine Veterans Home Machias, where he lived for the last 4 1/2 years with excellent care.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Resident Activity Fund c/o Lisa Cirone, Maine Veterans Home, 32 Veterans Way, Machias Maine 04654.
Graveside services will be announced at a later date.
