During the time I was a student at St A's in the 1960's, Tony was my academic and spiritual advisor and we became very close. He had such an important influence on my life there and, consequently, the course of my life thereafter.
After I graduated in 1968, we remained in close contact. I was present at his trial in Milwaukee. We lived in Boston at the same time for several years so I was able to introduce my wife and children to him. We occasionally did some political work together, although we travelled in different, parallel political groups. He was a treasured friend.
He remained in my thoughts over these more than fifty years and will remain there as long as I live.

Grateful thanks for Tony’s gentle presence in our world! Tony and his dogs were the manifestation of of Love in a world so desperate to find it!
Tony lived me briefly in Amherst when he was preparing to walk to Africa!

I was very fortunate as a member of the St. Anselm Class of 1968 to be inspired by Father Anthony (as he was then known) both in the classroom with his Introduction to Psychology course and in private conversations about the social-justice issues of the day. On the academic side, his clear and concise presentation of the material displayed his awesome powers of communication; in discussions of the role of the Christian in contemporary society, he embodied the ideal of the Gospel message of direct action out of concern for our fellow man and woman.
I was a member of a small group of students who were influenced by Father Tony's opposition to the War in Vietnam to take a stand against it and for the cessation of military action. I've always thought that his actions as a member of the Milwaukee 14 saved lives, both American and Vietnamese.
On a lighter note, I have in my mind's eye an image of his playing second base as a member of the Monastery softball team in around 1966, while I stood watching. I remember also his personable demeanor and how approachable he was toward all students on campus.
This is a sad time for me and, I know, for his family. I offer my condolences but with an awareness that Father Tony embodied a gentle but idealistic way of living one's life.
In sympathy,
