Obituary of Victoria Galina Mekras

Please share a memory of Victoria to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Our beautiful daughter, Victoria Galina Mekras, age 26, passed away at home surrounded by her loving family and dear friends in Deer Isle, Maine on April 4, 2023 after a long and courageous battle with juvenile onset Huntington’s Disease.   HD is a fatal neurological disease that degeneratively took her life.

Victoria is survived by her parents Valerie and Greg Mekras of Deer Isle;  her maternal Grandfather Chandler Barbour of Belfast, ME,  her maternal Uncle Steve Barbour and his spouse Tom Ponti of Boston, MA and Deer Isle;  and many, many extended family members as well as  friends, caregivers and Hospice workers who have become family.

She is preceded in death by her maternal Grandmother Nita Barbour; her paternal Grandfather Ron Culbreth and paternal Grandmother Sharon Culbreth; and her paternal Uncle Joe Culbreth.

Victoria was born in Moscow, Russia on 30 August 1996. Her parents traveled Russia to adopt her, returning home with her on 13 Sept 1997. She grew up in Sugar Land, Texas until her parents retired to Deer Isle, ME in 2017.   She graduated in 2015 from Dulles High School in Sugar Land, TX.

Victoria enjoyed life and her smile always lit up a room.   She loved time with family and enjoyed spending most summers in Deer Isle with her Mom and Grandparents.  She enjoyed managing the dance team in high school, live performances going to many plays, concerts and the Houston Rodeo and family travels around the US and the world.   In Maine she became interested in Yoga and formed “Victoria’s Yoga For All with her yoga teacher, Caroline and made many new friends there.   Always liking animals she grew up with cats and recently embraced raising chickens.

After Victoria’s diagnosis she and family became involved with the Maine Affiliate of Huntington’s Disease Society of America participating in fundraising activities.  She wore pink, her favorite color, to the annual Team Hope Walk and everyone who participated on her team also wore pink shirts that said TEAM QUEEN VICTORIA and tiaras.

143 our love, we know you are dancing in pink with your hair in braids with a tiara.

A celebration of life will be held on August 26, 2023 at The  Deer Isle/Sunset Congregational Church in Deer Isle, with reception to follow. A private internment in Mt. Adams cemetery will occur later.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Northern Light Home Care and Hospice, PO Box 931, Bangor ME 04402 or Huntington’s Disease Society of America at hdsa.org.
