Obituary of Frederick Roger Cullen

Frederick Roger Cullen was born February 4, 1939, and died at home on July 3, 2021, after courageously fighting a four year battle with cancer. His wife of 64 years, Anita Lee (Spaulding), who lovingly cared for him throughout his illness was by his side. If you were to stop by for a visit you would often find them sitting side by side holding hands as they watched a Red Sox Game. Anita has fond memories of their vacations together in North Conway, New Hampshire, whale watching in Bar Harbor, Maine and their trip to Europe. Fred will be greatly missed by all who knew him as he was known for his kindness and generosity and was always the first one to volunteer when there was a need. He had a self-sacrificing spirit. As one of Jehovah's Witnesses he had the privilege of volunteering with what is now referred to as the Regional Building Committee. As a volunteer with this program, he worked on projects in the United States and the Caribbean. When there was a natural disaster in the Caribbean, Fred volunteered his time to repair Kingdom Halls, homes and even the roof of a local hospital that was in dire need. Fred went to Jamaica as a volunteer five times and had a cartoon clipping in his office that read, "My body is here but, my heart is in Jamaica." Fred also traveled to Montserrat and Costa Rica with this program. Fred was a master plumber by trade for over 50 years and held licenses as such in all but one New England state. If you were to take a trip to the Boston area with him you would realize he had a great sense of humor as he told stories of the work he did at Fenway Park, The Prudential Center and Beacon Street. After he moved back to Maine, his birthplace, and eventually retired, he worked at the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland where he resided. It was soon obvious that the local art and its history had become his new hobby. He especially enjoyed working in the Wyeth Center and eventually Fred could tell you the story behind each Wyeth painting. As a young man Fred joined the Army and was stationed in France. After his children were born, he would practice counting to ten with them in French at the dinner table. Besides his wife Anita, he leaves behind his daughter Cynthia L. Pilson, son Timothy S. Cullen, grandson Nathan R. Gray, great-grandchildren, his sister Mary E. Early and his brother Robert Tom Cullen (Karen). Fred was preceded in death by his parents Arthur V. Cullen and Eleanor F. (Morse), brother Edward Cullen, sisters; Vada Soucy, Bonnie Fago, Vera Hunt and grandson Chad Frederick Gray. Fred was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Words cannot express the pain in our hearts at this time. However, he believed that the earth would one day become a paradise and we look forward to welcoming him back in the resurrection when there will be no more sickness or death. The family wants to thank the Cancer Center at Pen Bay Medical Center for the wonderful care and support they gave him and the family throughout his illness. We also want to thank the Thomaston Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses for the unwavering loving support they provided the family through his illness and since his death. A thank you also to Fred's and Anita's siblings and many friends for their visits, phone calls and support to his wife and children. There will be a zoom memorial service given at a later date.
