Augusta – Mary Joyce Smith Carter of Augusta passed away on Wednesday March 3rd, 2021, after a long battle of kidney disease. Mary was born on August 27th, 1951, in Hartford, Connecticut. Mary grew up in West Gardiner and graduated from Gardiner Area High School. Mary had a beautiful spirit, full of love and laughter and kindness. She was loved by everyone that met her. She was a cashier, truck driver, and palm cross maker. She spent her time making palm crosses for Catholic churches and making memories with her family and friends. Mary was predeceased by her parents, Hugh James Smith and Mary Joyce Smith of Chelsea, ME; and Harold & June Hinkley of West Gardiner, ME; brother Hugh J. Smith of Waterville, ME, and Elizabeth Hinkley Mansir of Augusta, ME. Mary is survived by her son, Jesse Michaels and fiancé Benda McCrary of Deland, FL; daughter Crystal Deane and husband Thomas Sowell of Astor, FL; sisters, Linda Smith Newcombe of Augusta, ME, Shirley Guimond with husband Danny of Sandford, FL, and Rita Smith of Portland, ME; brothers Edward Glazier of Manchester, ME and Albert Hinkley with wife Donna of Howland, ME; nieces Jaime Newcombe with fiancé Kyle Cormier of Augusta, ME, and Joleen Shorey of Manchester, ME; nephews Caleb Guimond of Florida, Joseph Guimond with wife Ashley of Alabama, and Edward Jr. Glazier of Louisiana, as well as many grandsons, great nieces and nephews, and cousins. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Gardiner, ME at a later date.
