Please share a memory of Barbara to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Seal Harbor Barbara McCrae Smallidge, age 89, passed away May 8, 2020 after a long period of declining health related to Alzheimer’s disease. She was born on July 26, 1930 in Seal Harbor, the daughter of Arthur and Clara (Hanna) McCrae. Barbara graduated from Gilman High School in Northeast Harbor in 1950 and the Eastern Beauty Academy in 1951. She married her high school sweetheart, Ernest ‘Bud’ Smallidge on September 7, 1952 and celebrated 67 years of marriage last fall. Barbara was predeceased by her parents, a grandson, Barry Smallidge, mother and father in law Ernestine and Wayne Bagley, brothers in law Peter Smallidge and Stephen Smallidge, step sister in law Norma Kemp and step brother in law Johnny Bagley. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son Arthur Smallidge and his wife Maryann of Trenton, and her daughters Elizabeth Goodwin and her husband Neil of Wells, and Cindy Daniels and her husband Patrick of Buxton, along with six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She also leaves her sister, Marion Smith and her husband Sheldon of New Mexico, sisters in law Barbara Wheaton and Gloria Smallidge of Florida, and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. Over the years Barbara was busy with jobs that she enjoyed in health care and what she called ‘waiting on the wealthy’, and hobbies including quilting, knitting, and gardening. Her most loved occupation was her companionship with Bud and the time they spent together on fishing trips, visiting the grandkids, their work and friendships with Grand Commandery and the Social Order of the Beauceant, caring for a cocker spaniel who was always by her side, and spending time at the camp that she and Bud built together at Lead Mountain Pond. Due to the pandemic, a gathering to celebrate her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Barbara’s memory to the Mount Desert Public Health Nursing Association or the Courtland Rehab and Living Center activities fund. Also, Mom would be very happy if you participated in an annual Loon Count at your camp or favorite lake. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.directcremationofmaine.com
