Obituary of Edward Charles Rosenzweig

Edward Charles Rosenzweig, devoted husband, father, and grandfather, died of complications of Alzheimer’s on April 3, 2020. He was 90 years old. Born on October 24, 1929, in Newark, New Jersey, Edward was the only child of Edward August and Josephine Wilhelmina Rosenzweig. He spent his childhood in Plainfield, graduating from Plainfield High School in 1948, where he was on the varsity swim and tennis teams, participated in the biology club and wrote for the school newspaper. He loved his summers on the beach in Ocean Grove and was a lifeguard there in high school and college. Edward graduated from Centre College in 1951 and then served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He received a Master of Science in 1956 and a PhD in Microbiology in 1959, both from the University of Maryland. Edward married the love of his life, Carla Heider Rosenzweig, on July 30, 1955. Being part of the Heider/Deuterman clan brought Edward great joy throughout his life. Edward and Carla made their home in Baltimore, Maryland, where they raised their two children, Greta and Henry, and where Edward did research and taught at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Edward later obtained a Master of Divinity from the Virginia Theological Seminary in 1976, residing in Alexandria, Virginia with his family for several years. Edward taught at St. Paul’s School for Boys in Baltimore and was the chaplain of the middle school until his retirement. Maine was a beloved vacation spot and after retirement, Edward and Carla moved to Blue Hill and later Brooklin. He and Carla were long time parishioners of St. Francis By the Sea Episcopal Church in Blue Hill. While in Maine, they maintained homes in Baltimore and Naples, Florida where they had many friends and family. Edward loved golf and tennis and his daily rounds to see his friends at the post office, Blue Hill Coop, and local farmers’ markets. Edward was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in the fall of 2016. He bravely met the challenges of this disease, eventually moving into an assisted living facility, Parker Ridge, where he received exceptional care . Always our biggest fan and support, he encouraged us to travel, to be curious and learn about other people and cultures, to be of service to others, to find balance between work and family, and to be our best selves. We will miss his laugh and warm hugs. Friends and family will gather in the summer to celebrate Edward’s life and he will be buried at Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C. Edward is survived by his wife Carla; daughter Greta C.H. Rosenzweig (Sandra Stein) of Hyattsville, Maryland and their two children, Gillian and Jacob Rosenzweig-Stein; son Henry A.H. (Minami Rosenzweig) of Ridgewood, New Jersey and their two children, Milla and Alan; nephew John Myers; nieces Elizabeth Imphong, Caroline Myers, Holly Heider Chapple, Catherine Blaha, Kristin DiCaro, Lisa Eifler, Heather Van Pelt and their families. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Edward’s memory to the Brooklin Volunteer Fire Department, Brooklin, Me, or the Tree of Life Food Pantry, Blue Hill, Me.
