Obituary of Barton Armstrong

MACHIAS Barton (Barney) Armstrong , 90, passed away peacefully with loved ones around him on March 19, 2009. Barney was born on November 21, 1918 in Machias, the son of the late Guy and Clara (Ramsdell) Armstrong. He was a graduate of Machias High School, class of 1938. Barney was employed at Millard Whitney’s Garage for 15 years and retired from Washington County’s Sheriff’s Department in 1980 after serving with 5 different Sheriffs. He was a Mason for 50 years and a member of the Whitneyville Congregational Church. Words cannot express the grief of our loss but his Legacy will live on in the lives of those he touched. He will be sadly missed by daughters Patti and husband Hal Phifer of Palm Bay, Florida, JoAnn Kilton of Franklin, and son Colby Kilton, of East Machias; grandchildren Riki Neeves, Tami Meeks, Barry Phifer, Tina Anselmo, Christie Foster, Matthew Foster, CJ Kilton and Joseph Kilton; great grandchildren McKenzi, Sydney, Chelsea, Paige, Denali, Ian, Matthew and Brooke; sister Beverly and husband Raymond Scripture of Brewer; brother-in-law Nonie Faulkingham of Jonesport, several nieces and nephews. Barney was predeceased by his first wife Olive (Urquhart) Armstrong and second wife Louise (Hooper) Armstrong, a son Gerald Kilton, a daughter Carolyn Kilton, a brother Gerald Armstong, sisters Madeline Armstrong and Helen Smith. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at Marshall Healthcare Facility for the wonderful care given our father during his stay there and special thanks to Bobby Beal, Barbara Grant and Sondra Richards for the love and support they showed him. Those who wish may contribute in Barney’s memory to the Whitneyville Congregational Church in care of CarolAnn Smith, Apt 5, Jonesboro Heights, Jonesboro, Maine 04648. A memorial service celebrating Barney’s life will be held at the Whitneyville Congregational Church on Thursday, March 26, 2009, at 10:00 A.M. with dear friend, Reverend Betty Duzen, officiating.
