Obituary of Elizabeth Newton Lewis

Elizabeth Newton Lewis, June 14 1922 – June 18, 2009. Born in Hallsboro, NC, Anne Elizabeth Newton was the daughter of Irl T. Newton and Mae Thompson Newton. After earning a B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, she was married to Radford Ferguson Lewis on June 8, 1944. They remained together until Radford’s death in Oct. 2007. They had two sons, Mathew Thomas Lewis, b. 1946, and David Newton Lewis, b. 1948.Elizabeth, “Lib” to her friends and loved ones, worked as a librarian for many years in New York. She was an avid gardener, painter, and fibre artist, spinning and weaving in her “loom room” in Oriental, North Carolina. In their retirement years Lib and Rad enjoyed much traveling and sailing. A major project they undertook together was the writing of a genealogy book which was published in 1998: “Tracking the Hunter: The Descendants of Nimrod Farguson and Rebecka Hudson”, for which they did considerable research in the UK and in Atlantic Canada.Elizabeth and Radford moved to Maine in 1997 to be near David and his children, Wenonah Helen Lewis, 26, of Weed, CA; and Jeffrey David Lewis, 16, of Islesboro.A memorial gathering will be held in Camden at Windward Gardens on Sunday, June 28, at 11:00 am.
