Obituary of Henry Smith

Henry Smith, 75, passed away September 26, 2009 after a brief battle with cancer. He was born in 1934 to Henry Smith and Mary A Smith ( Connolly) of Portland, Maine. He attended Chevras High School of Portland and upon graduation joined the military. He served in Korea and Japan during the conflict as an infantryman and was instrumental in setting up the Nike Missile base in Taiwan. He was stationed at Fort Niagra in Yougstown, N.Y. and was then transferred to Fort Bliss in El Paso,Texas. In 1962 he left the military to pursue a degree in culinary arts at Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute. He then worked as a chef and bar manager for many years at different locations around the state of Maine. He was predeceased by his mother and father, his sister Adelaide Curran, and brother John. He was also predeceased by his nephew Michael Curran. He married Mary Hardy in 1955 and had 5 children. They divorced in 1970 and he remained single until lhis death.He is survived by his daughters Cynthia Jackson of Illinois, and Colleen Pappas of Vermont. His sons Patrick and Michael Smith of Portland, and Daniel Smith, home place unknown. He is also survived by several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be held at the VA cemetery in Augusta October 13th at 1:00 p.m.. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are under the care of Direct Cremation of Maine 182 Waldo Avenue Belfast.
