Obituary of Robert Ashley Whitehead

Robert Ashley Whitehead, 87, died Thursday April 8, 2010 in Belfast, Maine. He was born February 5, 1923 in Belfast, the son of Walter and Edna Whitehead. Robert grew up in Belfast, and graduated from Crosby High School in 1941. He graduated from Maine Maritime Academy in 1942 and immediately joined the Navy and served during World War II. Robert married Sally Smardon his high school sweetheart in Washington, DC on September 29, 1944. Robert and Sally returned to Belfast where he owned and operated Whitehead’s Clothing Store until 1972 when he joined the sales force of Emery Waterhouse Company. Robert and Sally retired to Florida in 1985. They returned to Belfast in 2006. Robert is survived by his loving wife Sally of 65 years, a daughter Susan Page and her husband Terry of Marlboro, Massachusetts; a son Vaughn and his wife Sharon of Valrico, Florida and a son Robert and his wife Barbara of China, Maine; 6 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. There will be a Celebration of Robert’s Life on Sunday, April 18 at 2:00 in the Baxter Room at the Residence at Tall Pines, 24 Martin Lane, Belfast. The family has requested that any donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Maine, 170 Route 1, Suite 250, Falmouth, Maine 04105.
