Obituary of George Chester Sawyer

GEORGE CHESTER SAWYER, born December 25, 1940 to George Richard Sawyer and Margret Mary (Roche) Sawyer died peacefully at his home on July 11, 2010. After serving in the US Army both stateside and in Korea, he returned to Maine and started lobstering out of Bass Harbor in 1964. Harvesting the sea was his work, his joy, his fun, his life. He mentored many a young man in the trade including his son Michael who for the last ten years was at his father’s side aboard his beloved boat “The Ellen Marie”. George leaves behind his father’s wife, his stepmother and friend Jennie Sawyer; his wife of 47 years, Grace Marie (Neary) Sawyer; sons, Michael of Manset and Donald of Bar Harbor; a daughter Ellen Strout and her friend Robert Nolen of Southwest Harbor; grandchildren Allison, Julianna and Joshua Sawyer, Conrad Strout and one great-grandson, William; his brother James and wife Cessie; sisters-in-law Katherine and Beth; many nieces and nephews as well as many friends including Bill Carroll who could be counted on to the end. A mass of Christian burial will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday July 20th at St. Peters Catholic Church, Seawall Road, Manset. A gift in George’s memory can be made to Robert Bruce Goodrich Memorial Transportation Fund, Mary Dow Center, Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, 50 Union Street, Ellsworth, ME 04605.
