Obituary of Stewart Art Carter

Stewart Eugene “Art” Carter - Montville Art Carter, 74, died July 22, 2010, at his home. Born October 15, 1935 in Washington, DC, he was the son of Ennis and Nellie Carter. Just out of high school, Art worked for Rock Creek Ginger Ale in Washington, DC. He served as a Private First Class in the US Army, stationed in Germany during the 1950’s. Art married the love of his life, Sharon, in 1961 and they spent the next 49 years of his life together. Moving to Maine from Virginia in 1973, Art pursued his love of deer hunting, fishing, and gardening. When arriving in Maine, he worked for Mitchell’s Sheet Metal and Roofing in Freedom until he fell 30 ft. from a roof and broke his back. Always a hard worker, he and his wife owned and operated Carter’s General Store in Liberty for 18 years. He befriended many and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. His vegetable gardens were the envy of the neighborhood, and he often gave away more than his family ate. Art was known for his quick wit and practical jokes and was loved by all he met. Art umpired for the Liberty Little League, played Santa for Walker School and was Smokey the Bear in the Memorial Day Parade. He was a Civil War buff and an avid Yankees fan, loved history, the outdoors and antique Ford cars. He loved all of his neighbors, never met a stranger, and his family was very dear to him. Skip and Alice Foy and family, all the Harriman boys, Turners, Peaveys, (Richard and “Boob”) were very dear to him. Dee Dee Chadwick and her children were like his own children also. Art is survived by his loving wife Sharon Carter, of Montville; son Thomas Carter and girlfriend Rebecca Labbe, daughter Kathleen Overlock and husband Mark, mother-in-law Helen Bradford, brothers Robert Carter and his wife Betty, Kenneth Carter and his wife Pat, Clarence Carter and his wife Cathy, all of Virginia: his granddaughter Kristina Carter, his grandson Brandon Haskell and his wife Alisha of Palermo, his four great-grandchildren, Brett, Kyle, Jacob, and Isaac Haskell, many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, Art was predeceased by brothers Willie and Mickey, and sisters Doris and Shirley. As was his request, he will be cremated.
