Obituary of Phyllis Mae Dickey

Phyllis Mae Giggie Dickey died at her home in Augusta surrounded by her family on August 16, 2010 after a courageous battle with ALS. She was born on October 6, 1927 in California Settlement, Grand Falls NB to Theodore and Bernice (Lloyd) Giggie. She grew up in Patten on a potato farm, then moved to Monroe where she met and later married Elwyn N. Dickey. Phyllis graduated from Monroe High School and attended Husson College in Bangor. She worked at the DMV until her marriage in 1950. Elwyn and Phyllis farmed his family farm until they moved to Bethel in 1967 where she became Assistant Librarian at Gould Academy. After Elwyn's death in 1975, Phyllis moved to Augusta where she worked for the State of Maine Worker’s Compensation Commission until her retirement in 1992. She was the Past Noble Grand of the Loyal Rebekah Lodge of Monroe, Past President of Maine State Retirees of Area II and a past member of the Steering Committee. Phyllis enjoyed reading, making quilts and most of all she enjoyed her family and her camp on Swan Lake. She has two children, Lynn A. (Mrs. Jeffrey) Peterson of Harrison and Gail D. (Mrs. William) Brooke of Whitefield; three granddaughters Samantha Brooke, Rebecca Peterson and Caitlin Brooke. Phyllis was part of a wonderful family that includes her brother, Edwin Giggie of Madison, Avis (Mrs. Ralph) Currier of Eddington, Ruth (Mrs. Clyde) Epperson of Augusta, Mary Lou (Mrs. Lloyd) Nealley of Monroe, Neva (Mrs. Dale) Moody of Monroe and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her brother Theodore (Ted) Giggie Jr in 2004. A funeral will be held at the Monroe Community Church on Sunday, August 22nd at 1PM followed by a celebration of her life at her camp. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Monroe Community Church c/o Jim Corliss, 27 Trundy Road, Newburg, Me 04444 or the charity of your choice.
