Obituary of Judith A. Eastman
Judith Ann Eastman, 71, died on January 8, 2011 with her family by her side. She was born in Portland, Maine on July 4, 1939 to Hilda (Paul) and Allan Douglas Metcalfe. She attended schools in Sanford, Maine and in Virginia, and she graduated from Macintosh College with an Associates Degree in Business.
Judith was employed by various shoe mills in Sanford, W.T. Grant, Norgetown Cleaners, and for 13 years she very happily held the position of Activities Director at Greenwood Center in Sanford, Maine.
She had many interests including athletics. Judith was a strong athlete and played many sports in high school, basketball being her favorite. As an adult she loved to watch golf and was very pleased when Phil Michelson won the Masters last April. She was very proud to be a lifelong member of Weight Watchers, losing 90 pounds over several years. Judith loved swimming at the local lakes and beaches and spent many summers enjoying Wells and Ogunquit Beaches with her family. She frequently walked on Wells Beach and would do so well into the early winter. She was an avid reader and especially loved mysteries and historic novels. She taught her daughters to dance and would make them laugh by occasionally dancing the jitterbug using the handle of the refrigerator door. Judith had a deep intuition, and her children and grandchildren could never keep anything from her! She had a deep connection with her family and friends, and she could always make anyone laugh which she especially liked to do while breakfasting out or sharing an ice cream cone. Judith loved life and lived every minute to the fullest.
She is survived by her daughters, Kathy Fernberg and Elizabeth Earl of Sanford, brothers Ernest Metcalfe of Sanford, Harold Metcalfe and his wife Ellen of Sanford, Michael Metcalfe and his wife Elizabeth of York, granddaughters Whitney, Sarah, and Rebecca Earl of Sanford, grandson James Earl of Sanford, and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express their great appreciation to the staff of Varney Crossing Nursing Care Center for their kindness and loving care shown to Judith.
At her request, a graveside service will be held in the spring. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Sanford-Springvale YMCA, 1 Emile Lavasseur Drive, Sanford, Maine 04073. On-line condolences may be offered at www.directcremationofmaine.com.
