Please share a memory of A. to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
A. Marie Liberty died on Friday, March 11, 2011 at the age of 76 at Sonogee Rehabilitation & Living Center in Bar Harbor from complications related to metastatic breast cancer. She was born on July 26, 1934 in Ellsworth, the fourth and youngest child of Guy Frederick Closson and Grace Higgins Closson. She is preceded in death by her brothers Luray and Merl. Marie was educated in Ellsworth public schools and at the University of Maine in Orono where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Food and Nutrition in 1985. She was a strong-willed and open-hearted person with a deeply held and cherished faith. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Ellsworth (UCC), where she loved singing in the choir. As a teen, she was in the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls (IORG). She loved sewing and quilting, was a Charter Member of the Pine Tree Quilter’s Guild since 1978. She was an avid reader, loved discussing new ideas and was a member of the Ellsworth Literature Club for 50 years. The extent of Marie’s love and devotion to family and friends is well known. She is survived by her sister, Corris Sittnick of Ellsworth; her children, Guy Phillips of Florida, Carol Smith of Lamoine and Kenneth Liberty of Susanville, California as well as numerous nephews, nieces, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Ellsworth on Saturday, March 19, 2011 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, Mary Dow Center’s “Robert Bruce Goodrich Memorial Transportation Scholarship Fund”. With appreciation for all they did for she believed in paying it forward. With knowledge that Marie had a West Coast spirit stuck in an Eastern Time Zone ‘body’, Marie was loved and will be sorely missed.
