Please share a memory of Eben to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
EBEN R. SHAW, 62 of Appleton, died peacefully surrounded by his family on May 8, 2011 at Waldo County General Hospital. He was born on October 2, 1948 in San Juan, Puerto Rico to Frank H. and Jannetta Shaw of Belfast. Eben moved frequently in the United States and lived in Germany until age 16, as his father served in the U.S. military. He attended Hebron Academy, Hebron, Maine and San Diego College in San Diego, California. He crewed on the research vessel, The Hero, to the Antarctic and worked on the Mattie and the Mistress windjammers out of Camden. He met his wife, Betsy Gates, and they were married in 1972 in Camden. Eben was a skilled craftsman and made beautiful dories and custom-finished day sailers. He was also a gifted carpenter. Eben worked at Scheel Yachts, North End Marine and Sabre Yachts, all of Rockland until 1993. He loved boats and being out on the water and had a great appreciation for nature and regard for God’s creatures. Known for his dry humor and sense of mischief, he loved his family dearly and will be sorely missed. Eben is survived by his wife Elizabeth G. Shaw; a daughter Jannetta A. Shaw; son Jeb H. Shaw, all of Appleton; two sisters, Anne H. Shaw of Belfast and Jane H. Shaw of Boscawen, New Hampshire. Memorial service will be held May 13th, 2 p.m. at Appleton Baptist Church with Pastor Mark Adolphsen officiating. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Good Shepherd Food Bank, 88 Stevens Road, Brewer, ME 04412-2252. Arrangements are under the care of Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Avenue, Belfast. On-line condolences may be offered to the family at www.ripostafh.com.
