Obituary of John B. Cahoon

JOHN B. CAHOON, 72, passed away May 13, 2011 at Bangor. He was born in Edmonston, New Brunswick, Canada on March 15, 1939, son of John and Catherine (McDermott) Cahoon. He graduated from Madawaska High School and University of Maine with a degree in forestry. He served in the U.S. Army. John was self-employed as a land surveyor in Maine and worked closely with Mary Gregor of Houlton for the past 30 years. In his younger days, he was a small plane pilot. He supported Landowner’s Property Rights of Maine, was a member of the American Legion, the NRA, Ducks Unlimited, the former Atlantic Salmon Association, the Maine Land Surveyors Association, the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping, the New England Section of A.C.S.M. and the Society of American Foresters. John was an avid sportsman, hunter and fisherman. He was a highly skilled decoy carver. John was a gentle giant of a man who loved his family and was highly respected by all who knew him. John loved the State of Maine and fought hard for property owner’s rights. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Catherine Cahoon. John is survived by his beloved wife, Roberta Coltart Cahoon, his son John Robert Cahoon and daughter Catherine Ann Cahoon. He will be missed by his extended family. A celebration of John’s life will be held at the American Legion, Post 147, Main Street in Madawaska on Thursday, May 19th at 2 p.m. All are invited to attend. There will be a private burial in the Madawaska Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to The NRA Foundation, 11250 Waples Mill Road, Fairfax, VA 22030.
