Obituary of Carlton E. Dowling
EAST MACHIAS - Carlton E. Dowling, 84, passed away peacefully Oct. 23, 2011, at a Bangor health care facility after a brief illness. He was born Dec. 23, 1926, in Jacksonville, son of George and Ivadell (Huntley) Dowling. He lived his entire life in Jacksonville; attended grade school in Jacksonville and graduated from Washington Academy, class of 1944. After high school he served in the Merchant Marines during World War II, from 1945 to 1946. He returned to Jacksonville, worked at Machias Textile Mill and Coca-Cola Bottling, and retired from the University of Maine at Machias physical plant. Carlton was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, carpentry, gardening and especially snowmobiling and ATVing. He also loved spending time at the camps on Hadley Lake. He was a director and member of Downeast Trail Riders Club and supported many other area clubs. Carlton is survived by his wife, Majorie (Griffin) Dowling; son, Gary and his wife, Janet Dowling, of East Machias; son, Jeff and his wife, Sue Dowling, of Hermon; granddaughter, Nicole Look and her husband, Josh, of Orrington; grandson, Corin Dowling of East Machias; a brother, Elbridge Dowling of Harrington; sister, Amy Graham of Marion and Victoria, Texas; along with several cousins, nieces and nephews. Carlton was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Olyn and Cecil Dowling; and one sister, Louis Lund. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at Jacksonville Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Holmes officiating.
