Obituary of Harland E. Nickerson

HARLAND E. NICKERSON, 81, passed away at his residence in Belfast on May 15, 2012 surrounded by his family. He was born April 30, 1931 in Belfast, the son of Elmer and Georgia A. (Daggett) Nickerson. Harland was a U.S. Navy veteran. For many years, he owned and operated Nickerson’s Exxon and U-Haul in Belfast with his family. He also worked for the shuttle service at Dutch Chevrolet and was a volunteer driver for Waldo County Transportation until February of this year. Harland was a proud member for over 50 years of the Masons and Shriners and was a medic at the circus. He was president of the Curling Club where he was very active along with his wife Kay. One of Harland’s greatest enjoyments was camping and spending time with his granddaughter Ashley and their trips to the Fryeburg Fair. He also enjoyed working with his horses, dancing which included going to the Union dances on Saturday night as well as the Anah Shrine dances. Harland also had a love for antique cars and finally got his Model A from 1931, which was the year he was born. He also loved power boating on Pitcher Pond at the family camp and also on Penobscot Bay. He is predeceased by his parents; his wife Catherine in 2008; brothers Raymond Nickerson and Byron Nickerson; sister Avis Metcalf. Harland is survived by his loving daughters, Julie Gray and husband Bill of Bucksport, Vicki Nickerson and fiancé Ed Flanders of Belfast; his siblings, Gena Shute, June Russ, Teresa Crosby, Edith Nickerson, Dorothy Moody and step-sister Carlene Pierce; his beloved grandchildren, Malory K. Bowen, Adam E.H. Flanders, Ashley E. Flanders; great-grandson Madden MacLeod; many nieces, nephews, cousins and special dance partner, Nola Studley; and his friend Ray Paul. Friends and family are invited to call from 2-4 pm on Sunday, May 20, 2012, where a Masonic service and military honors will rendered.
