Obituary of Kathleen Kay Durrell
KATHLEEN”KAY” SANBORN DURRELL - Kay died on July 12, 2012. She was born June 8, 1921 the daughter of Ellis and Mina (Southard) Sanborn. She graduated from Waterville High School and Coburn Classical Institute. Kay worked for New England Telephone and Telegraph Company before enlisting in the Army of the United States in 1943. Among her decorations and citations, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, Good Conduct Medal, WAAC Service Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal. After her Honorable Discharge in 1945, she worked for Hollingsworth and Whitney and Scott Paper. In 1948 she married Harland “Hardo” Durrell.
Ice skating, sewing, spending time at camp in Carrabassett Valley, drawing, gourmet cooking and entertaining were some of her favorite past times. Kay especially enjoyed spending time with her good friend Doris Karter.
She was predeceased by her husband and her four brothers, Wesley, Colby, Ellis and Omar Sanborn. She is survived by her nephews, Sandy Sanborn of South Carolina and Colby Sanborn of New York and her niece Deidre Hicken of New York. Special thanks to her caretakers at Oak Grove Center and Hospice. Her place of final rest will be at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Augusta. Condolences may be sent to Austin Law Office, PO Box 150, So.
