Obituary of Carroll William Freeman

MILLINOCKET - Carroll William Freeman Jr., 85, died unexpectedly June 15, 2013. He was born Jan. 2, 1928, in Auburn, son of Carroll William and Catherine (Normanly) Freeman. A 1946 graduate of Edward Little High School, Carroll was also a proud member of the class of 1949 at Maine Maritime Academy where he received a Bachelor of Science in marine engineering. He also later received a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering. Carroll served as president of Maine Maritime Academy Alumni Association. From 1949-1950, Carroll traveled extensively throughout Africa, Caribbean and South America as a steam engineer with Farrell Lines out of Brooklyn, N.Y. Upon his return in 1951, Carroll married Doris Vachon. The two moved to Millinocket where Carroll worked at Great Northern Paper Co. while also serving in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He was the groundwood superintendent at GNP until his retirement in 1986 and afterwards, Carroll worked as an international paper industry consultant for the next eight years. He was chairman for the Mechanical Pulping Committee of the Technical Association of the pulp and paper industry, and a member of Paper Industry Management Association. For the past 63 years Carroll had been an active community member in Millinocket. He was a communicant of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church where he lectored, taught religious education, and served with Knights of Columbus and the finance committee. Carroll volunteered many hours leading several area groups. He once served as president of Katahdin Area Chapter AARP, and was a board member for both Katahdin Federal Credit Union and Millinocket Public Library. He also was a member of Millinocket Municipal Budget Committee, and volunteered with Millinocket Lions Club and Boy Scouts of America. Carroll's love of music led him to a local singing group, Dot and the HasBeens, where he was regularly recognized for his rendition of "Danny Boy." A lifetime lover of sports, Carroll not only watched from the sidelines, but played baseball and football at MMA and semi-pro baseball and basketball with New Auburn Social Club and with Millinocket area teams, the Emerson's Pills and Aggies in the 1950s. Carroll is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Doris Freeman of Millinocket; daughter, Linda Freeman Kilar and husband, Fred, of New London, N.H.; sons, C. William Freeman III and wife, Sharon, of Readfield and Treasure Island, Fla., John P. Freeman and wife, Lavina, of Millinocket, and Kevin M. Freeman and wife, Michelle, of Scarborough; daughter, Anne Freeman Walker and husband, Eric, of Naples; brother, Thomas Freeman and wife, Elaine, of Lewiston; 12 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and a multitude of nieces and nephews. A prayer respect in the church and a fellowship with the immediate family will be held 9-10 a.m. Thursday, June 20, within the St. Martin of Tour's Catholic Church lobby, where a funeral Mass will begin 10 a.m. Gifts in Carroll's memory may be sent to Class of 1949 Memorial Scholarship Fund, Maine Maritime Academy, Castine, ME 04421
