Obituary of Gerald William Nolan

HALLOWELL -- World War II veteran and recipient of the Bronze Star, Gerald William Nolan Sr., 88, passed away Sunday, June 16, 2013, at his Hallowell home. Gerald was born Jan. 25, 1925, in Harmony, the son of Harry Nolan and Viola Ellis Nolan. He attended school in Skowhegan before being drafted into the Army in 1943. He attained the rank of sergeant while serving in Europe during the war. On Aug. 28, 1948, he married Joy Jean Rowe, of Hallowell. They were married for 56 years before her passing in 2004. Together, they raised five sons. Gerald, an avid sports fan who loved to debate politics with anyone, was retired from the Hallowell Shoe Factory. He was predeceased by his parents; his wife; son David Nolan; son Tim Nolan; granddaughter Kelley Nolan; brothers Lewis Steward, Victor Steward, Clayton Steward and Linwood Steward; and sister Harriet "Teddy" Murray. He is survived by sons Gerald William Nolan Jr. and wife Janet, of Bluffton, S.C., Jody Nolan, of Mont gomery, Ala., and Randy Nolan, of Oakland (who had been his dad's caregiver for the last nine years); two sisters, Patsy Baker and Shirley Campbell, both of Skowhegan; four granddaughters; a grandson; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Our hearts are devastated by you leaving us. The one saving grace is that you're being reunited with the love of your life, our Mom. Rest in peace, Dad. A graveside service is scheduled to be held in September at the Hallowell Cemetery.
