Obituary of Rowland Bunny Logan

ROWLAND (BUNNY) ELIZABETH LOGAN August 1, 1923-August 5, 2013 Rowland ( Bunny ) Elizabeth Logan entered into eternal rest in the early hours of August 5, 2013. She was at home among the evergreens and the singing birds at the time of her death. Bunny was born in Los Angeles, California to Commander John Edward and Rowland ( McCorkle ) Logan on August 1, 1923. Before she was 15, she had lived in Los Angeles, Cuba, Somoa, Kitsop, Washington, Norfolk, Virginia, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and then back to Los Angeles , California. After graduating with honors from Los Angeles Manual Arts High School in 1940, Bunny attended and graduated from UCLA with honors and a degree in Zoology. In 1950 she earned her doctorate in philosophy from Northwestern College. Because Bunny loved the out-doors, wildlife and nature, she chose her first job to be in Bar Harbor, Maine at Jackson Laboratories. While working in Bar Harbor, she was a first hand witness to the great fire of October 1947. She escaped with only a hand full of possessions including the fire pass that enabled her to go to work at the laboratories. After leaving Bar Harbor and finishing her doctorate work at NWU, Bunny was a professor of Biology at Gettysburg College where she taught Anatomy and Physiology for 40 years. In the early 60's, Bunny would return to her beloved Maine where she built a cabin on Islesboro and later would retire to her new home. She never tired of a wait for the ferry nor dismissed any ferry ride as unimportant. Always, there was much to see, books to be read, or letters written. She was active in volunteering at the Islesboro Historical Society and was the Treasurer for the Second Baptist Church of which she was a member and a trustee. Over the years she could be seen riding her bicycle from Turtlehead to Dark Harbor for coffee each morning . She especially enjoyed ornithology and kept the bird feeders full at all times. At other times she would be gardening or working in her wood working shop. However, her greatest passion was working with her wide array of electric model trains. In her latter years , Bunny became very interested in all discussions and matters concerning the Bible, her belief in Jesus Christ , and Christian doctrine. To that end, she read hundreds of books in English, Greek, Latin, and German. Bunny was predeceased by her parents and her special aunt Julia Norton McCorkle. Rowland Elizabeth Logan is survived by her dear friends and neighbors Arthur and Sharon Ashley of Islesboro and all people of Islesboro. A memorial service will be held on August 17, 2013 at the Second Baptist Church of Islesboro at 11:00 A. M. Donations in her memory may be made to the Islesboro Second Baptist Church, the Boardman Cottage, or to the Islesboro Health Center.
