Obituary of Winifred Rosemond Nickerson Mulkern

Winifred Rosemond Nickerson Mulkern, 91, of Oxford, Maine, died on October 5, 2013 at her home. She was born on February 8, 1922 in Nova Scotia, the oldest child of Harold and Emma Nickerson. The family immigrated to the U.S. when she was very young and Winnie went to school on Nantucket Island where she graduated from high school. She met and married her husband, Bob, there, but they soon moved back to the Boston area. She spent most of her life in Massachusetts and Connecticut. As a young woman, Winnie was totally focused on her family and enjoyed cooking nutritious meals for them. After the children were grown, she worked at a hospital in Meriden, Connecticut. In later years, she enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, watching favorite TV game shows, and visiting with her large family. Twelve years ago she moved to Maine where she lived with her sister Gen and became an integral part of Gen’s extended family and came to deeply love her Woodstock Adventist church family. (At the time of her death, she had been a devout member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church for 67 years.) She is survived by her brother Norman (Peg) Nickerson and sister Genevieve Solonika, sons Robert (Shirley) Mulkern, Harold/Bud(Sheila) Mulkern, and Michael (Deirdre) Mulkern, daughter Charlene (Ray) Gasperini, eleven grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and ten great, great grandchildren. They will all miss her radiant smile, consistent faith in God, and dedication to her large family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Mulkern, her parents, sisters Marie Folger, Elaine Nickerson, and Bertha Janice Nickerson, brother Harold Nickerson, Jr., daughters Janice Downing and Kathy Gorham, nephew Mark Lindquist, and great, great grandson Thomas Mulkern. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. at the Woodstock Seventh-day Adventist Church, 25 Perkins Valley Road, Bryant, Maine, Pastor Greg Carlson officiating.
