Obituary of Daniel F Coulters
DANIEL F COULTERS JR., 80 of Stockton Springs, passed away November 1, 2013 at Bangor. He was born in Warwick, Rhode Island on March 11, 1933. Dan graduated from the University of Rhode Island with an electrical engineering degree which he completed after serving in the Coast Guard. He lived in France for many years and traveled extensively world-wide as an employee of Westinghouse Electric Co. and North American Philips Corporation. He loved all outdoor activities, especially fishing and camping. For many years he was active in the Boy Scouts leading many camping expeditions. Dan’s love of life and helping others brought him to the political ring in 1999 when he made a successful run for Selectman of Stockton Springs. He served the Town in that capacity until 2003. During those years, he successfully secured grant monies for the docks in the Stockton Harbor and was instrumental in changing the Town’s government to the current manager/select board format. His motto was “How do you know it can’t be done if you don’t try?” He welcomed challenges for improvement and kept the Stockton residents foremost in his mind. He was definitely a participant in life and not a bystander.
Nascar was a favorite sport, and he was able to go to races all over the country. One of his special achievements was taking a Nascar driver’s course and driving the course at Charlotte Speedway.
Dan was always a hands-on person and could fix about anything, and those who knew him well will attest to his ‘garage resources’. He enjoyed showing others how to make things work.
Children and grandchildren held a special place in his life.
He was predeceased by a close sister, Shirley Coulters-Hudson. Dan is survived by his wife Barbara Coutlters of Stockton Springs, his children, Fran Coulters of Texas, Teresa Lashley and husband Ted of North Carolina, Sharon Ciufo and husband Mark of Pennsylvania; Melanie Ahouse, David Ahouse, both of New York and Gary Ahouse and wife Ann of Pennsylvania; his brother David Coulters and wife Kate of Caribou; 13 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; special niece Susan Hudson and "cousin Dick" Haney.
A celebration of life service will be held 12 p.m. Friday, November 8th at Stockton Springs Town Office. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations to Stockton Springs Volunteer Ambulance Corp. Arrangements are under the care of Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Avenue, Belfast. On-line condolences may be offered at www.ripostafh.com.
