Obituary of Richard L. Palmer
Richard Leonard Palmer, 81, of Montville, went home to the Lord surrounded by family on Wednesday Jan. 8, 2014. He was born on September 22, 1932 to Lysander Cutler and Glenise (Thompson) Palmer in Freedom, ME. He grew up working with his father as a mechanic in Palmers Garage. Richard joined the Army National Guard in 1950 while in high school and retired after 34 years of service. He attended many military schools and reached the title of Master Sargent. Richard was married to Doris Ard on July 1, 1951. He graduated from Walker High School in Liberty, ME in 1952. Richard worked at Monmouth Canning Company and Augusta Iron Works while he continued working full-time for the Maine Army National Guard. He belonged to the Liberty/ Montville Volunteer Fire Department and served as a selectman for the town of Montville. Richard was also a leader with the Boy Scouts of Liberty, ME. Troop #39,as well as an active member of the NRA and the Friends and Neighbors ATV Club. He belonged to the Liberty Masonic Lodge #111 AFAM/PM and was a Life Member of Arbutis Chapter #19 in Liberty, ME. Richard will be remembered by his family for standing up for what he believed in, a family man who loved with all his heart, and a true patriot. One of his greatest joys was to sit back and watch as all the "little ones" played. He was a very wise man who said what he meant. Richard will be treasured and loved by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
He was predeceased by his parents, son Leonard Allan Palmer, son Nelson Stevens, and brother Keith Palmer.
He will be greatly missed by his wife of 62 years, Doris Palmer of Montville; children, Charles Palmer and wife Maureen, Steven Palmer, Lysander Palmer and wife Debra, Earl Stevens and wife Christine, Ronnie Newton and wife Roxanne, Debbie Stevens and Linda Marple of Liberty; siblings, Earl Palmer of Florida, Eugene Palmer and wife Nyoka "Okie" of Belmont, Patricia Ludwick of New Hampshire, Sister-in-Law Faith Palmer from Massachusetts.
He loved his grandchildren with his whole Heart and cherished every moment he got to spend with them they will remember him for his wisdom. He will be missed by Grandchildren Lori Shepherd, "Skipper" Leonard Palmer, "Sunshine" Tonya Esancy, his "Little Indian" Moxi Palmer, Corey Worcester, Amy Bliss, Ike Olofson, Tara Marple, Carrie Mancini, Ellen Sherman as well as numerous other Special Grandchildren, Great-Grandchildren, Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, Family, and Friends.
Special Thanks to his sidekick "Bubba" Jacob McGray, Marrie Pottle, Ron Grondin, Hospice Volunteers of Waldo County, Kno-Wal-Lin, and the VA Hospital in Augusta, ME.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Liberty Masonic Lodge #111 for roof repair.
The Service was held on Monday January 13, 2014. Friends and family are invited to call at 1pm with a funeral service at 2pm at Liberty Baptist Church with Pastor Steve Danniels and Pastor Steve Kendall officiating. Reception will follow at the Liberty Masonic hall immediately following the service. Committal will be at a later date.
