Obituary of Jean L. Kief
BAR HARBOR - Jean L. Kief died peacefully Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at her home, surrounded by her family. She was born Dec. 16, 1932, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Palm Beach, Fla., to Gerard and Euphemia Hopkins.Jean attended Bar Harbor schools and graduated in 1951. She married Lawrence Kief April 19, 1951, and moved to California after graduation to be with her husband where he was stationed in the Army. Upon their return to Bar Harbor, Jean began the task of raising their children and working at various jobs. She took a job at the First National Bank and began her career. She worked at the First National for 30 years and loved all the various positions she held. She retired from the bank as assistant trust officer. Jean was a life member of the Congregational Church of Bar Harbor for over 50 years. She was active in the Prayer Shawl Ministry. She knit and donated over 100 shawls. Jean joined the Eastern Star in 1957 and was Worthy Matron of Harmony Chapter No. 43. She was a life member of Irene Chapter in Ellsworth.Jean was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence. She leaves behind Kathryn Kief of Bar Harbor, David Kief and wife, Chris, of Bar Harbor, Karen Cole and husband, Peter, of Southport Island; grandchildren, Heather and Deidre Dority, Joseph and Amelia Kief, Lydia and Doria Cole; as well as great-grandchildren, Molly Dority and Greta and Simon Bishop; and her sister, Joan Smith of Bar Harbor.At her request, there will be an intimate graveside service in the spring. Jean was compassionately cared for by the employees of Hancock County HomeCare and Hospice and would be pleased with any donation in her name to them at P.O.
