Obituary of Phyllis A. Hall

Phyllis A. (West) Hall, 91 of Stockton Springs, passed away on Friday, February 21, 2014 at Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast. She was born October 6, 1922 on Verona Island, the daughter of Albert and Delia (Quimby) West. Phyllis was employed for many years at Belfast Manufacturing, retiring October 5, 1984 from the Waldo Shoe Company in Belfast. On May 14, 1986, Phyllis began her dream job when she joined the Stockton Springs Ambulance Service becoming its Director at the age of 65 on June 16, 1988, a position she held for 18 years. Phyllis was widely known and recognized for her community service, twice being nominated for the Jefferson Award, receiving in 2002 the Midcoast EMS Merit Award, and in 2003 being presented by then Governor Baldacci’s Maine Lifetime Achievement Award. Phyllis was an outstanding seamstress, cook and loved to crochet and knit for others. She is estimated to have knitted thousands of mittens for area school children and prayer shawls for cancer patients. Phyllis is survived by her son and daughter in law, Ralph Sr. and Gloria Hall of Stockton Springs, grandson Ralph Jr. and Shelli Hall of Bar Harbor; granddaughter April Hall and partner David Berry and great-granddaughter Rachel Berry of Hallowell; sister Lillian of Sebring, Florida and sister-in-law Helen West as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents, Phyllis was predeceased by the love of her life, Albert Hall; sisters Helen Smith and Carolyn Perkins and brother James West. A graveside service for Phyllis and her late husband Albert will be held at the convenience of the family in the spring.
