Obituary of Charles L. Deveney

Charles Leo Deveney 73, of Belfast passed away March 22, 2014 in Togus. He was born April 3, 1940 in Lebanon, NH a son of the late Albert and Katherine (Brooks) Deveney. Charles served in the US Air Force in Tacoma, WA with the Air Police and in the late 1950’s was assigned to guard the plane of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. While home on leave he married his childhood sweetheart, Audrey Mae on Valentine’s Day, 1959. After a daughter and then a son was born, he changed careers from a machinist in New England to a tractor trailer operator with U.P.S. in Florida. He then caught the travel bug with 18 wheels and the open road. He contracted his own “big rig” with International Transport in all 48 states hauling everything from bumble bees to heavy road equipment, barrels of coins to the US Mint, to jet engines and navy torpedoes. “Road Hog” was his CB handle. His last ten years driving were spent driving for Hartt Transportation in Bangor, where he earned “driver of the year” in 1999 and 2002. He also won honors for safe driving, student teaching and was the “driver of the month” in 2001, 2002 and 2006 for the State of Maine with over 7 million safe miles logged. After retirement, he could be found on Penobscot Bay in Belfast playing on and in the water. Along with his wife of 55 years he leaves behind his two children Crystal Mae and Wade Charles, a granddaughter Coriander Mae, with two great grandson Toryn Xavier and Landyn Riley; and a grandson Joshua Charles with a great granddaughter Emma Rose and his siblings Kathy Walker of Enfield, NH and Donald Deveney of South Acworth, NH. There will be a private ceremony at a future date for the family.
