Obituary of Robert A. Fletcher
Robert "Bob" Arvide Fletcher, 74, of China, passed away peacefully March 24, with his family by his side. He passed away at the VA Maine Healthcare System at Togus following a long illness.
He was born at home in China April 22, 1939, the son of the late Stanley and Barbara (Bumps) Fletcher. He attended China Elementary School and graduated from Erskine Academy in 1957. Bob was very proud to have served in the Army in France. He served as secretary for Gen. William Westmoreland. He retired as a driver from the United Parcel Service in 1999 after almost three decades of service.
He is survived by his loving wife, Judith Ann (Jackson) Fletcher, of China; his sons, David Fletcher of China, son Danny Fletcher, of Pemaquid and Bobby Fletcher, of Farmingdale; his grandsons, Scott Fletcher and his wife, Regina, of China and Seth Fletcher, of Pemaquid. He adored his two great-granddaughters, Jasmine Fletcher and Virginia Fletcher, of China. He is also survived by his sisters, Shirley (Fletcher) Fitzgerald, and her husband, Carlton, of Vassalboro and Joan (Fletcher) Hammond and her husband, Joe, of The Villages, Fla. In addition, there are surviving aunts and many nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his dog, Sadie.
Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He spent many summers camping in Pemaquid from the time he was a child through last summer. For many years, he was a seasonal camper at Sherwood Forest and Pemaquid Point Campgrounds where he and his wife made lots of friends from all over. He loved meeting people, making new friends and he loved talking about anything and always had an animated joke to tell. Any time Bob and Judy traveled, they could always rest assured they would have one or more of their many camping friends to visit and stay with. Bob will truly be missed by many. It always amazed his family how many lives he touched during his battle with cancer. He would go through the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care in Augusta like he owned the place. He always gave and received lots of hugs from the staff there. They, along with MaineGeneral Medical Center, gave him outstanding care.
A celebration of life service with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 13, at the China Baptist Church with a reception to follow in the church vestry. In lieu of flowers, donations to the China Baptist Church, P.O. Box 6095, China Village, Maine 04926, would be welcomed and appreciated.
