Obituary of John J. Meluskey
JOHN J. MELUSKEY, JR., 67, passed away peacefully after a long illness at the Courtland Rehabilitation & Living Center, Ellsworth, ME on May 9, 2014. John was born in Philadelphia, PA on January 12, 1947 and was the son of the late John J. Meluskey Sr. and Eleanor M. Barker Meluskey. He lived most of his life in the Philadelphia area before moving to Maine in 2002.
He is survived by his two daughters, Susan Horvath and her husband Joe, Heather Meluskey and her husband Neel Dapthary; four grandchildren, Bo, Bailey, Will and Drew; brother Anthony Meluskey and his wife Dottie all of Pennsylvania; sister Eleanor Ellis and her husband Barry of Delaware; many nieces and nephews; close long-time friend at H.O.M.E. Tim Rimositis; and faithful dog Morgan and cat Tommy.
John never lost his love of Philadelphia sports, especially football. In his youth he was a well known athlete, starring in both football and baseball. Later he coached his daughter’s sports teams and was a football referee and college basketball referee. John was also very proud that he had earned a pilot’s license and flew small engine planes out of Delaware and Pennsylvania. Professionally he was a co-founder of his own construction firm. After reaching H.O.M.E. he founded Abby’s Attic in Oreland to help with fundraising for H.O.M.E. John’s Springer Spaniel, Abigal, was the namesake for the thrift shop. He was also involved with the Outreach Program and could frequently be seen participating in the services at the Wayside Chapel of St. Francis. John will especially be remembered for his love of animals.
John’s family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff of Courtland Rehabilitation & Living Center as well as Eastern Maine Medical Center, especially the nurses, for helping to make his last months more comfortable and treating him with kindness and respect.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Pennsylvania. Arrangements are under the care of Direct Cremation of Maine, 182 Waldo Avenue, Belfast
