Obituary of Raymond J. McGuire

Raymond J. (Ray) McGuire, 85, of Brooks, passed away on March 20, 2015 at the Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast, Maine. Ray was born September 3, 1929 in Lexington, Massachusetts, son of Charles and Dorothy (Roach) McGuire. Ray founded the Military History Bookshop in Boston 50 years ago, and moved it to Maine in 1987. Together with his wife Andrea, he specialized in rare and out of print books with subjects relating to military, naval, maritime, aviation, China and the Far East. He and his good friends Charlie and Nancy Woolley of Vermont, created many large book collections that were sold to institutional libraries and to customers around the world. And they had a lot of fun doing it. Ray, a loving husband, father and friend, was compassionate and caring as evidenced by the many rescue cats that he and Andrea adopted. He loved history, was a talented artist, a lover of jazz and big band music, and was a founding member of the Brooks Historical Society. He was particularly proud of his Scottish heritage. He said he always wanted to own a tree so moving to the beautiful town of Brooks fulfilled that dream. Survivors include his wife Andrea McGuire of Brooks, his daughter Susy Adams and her husband Keith Epps of Edinburgh, Scotland, his sister Lois Tobias, his niece Phyllis Tobias, his nephew Bobby Tobias, and their children, and the children of his deceased brother Paul - Rebecca Sherwood, Abigail McGuire, Orianna Brown, Charles McGuire, James McGuire, Thomas McGuire and the late Harding McGuire A memorial service conducted by the Rev. Russ Arnold will be held on Saturday March 28th at 1 o'clock at the Brooks Congregational Church. A reception will follow the service.
