Obituary of Catherine Louise Squires

Catherine Louise Walsh Squires (92)of Augusta, Maine,formerly of Westport and Norwalk, CT. Born-December 3, 1922 returned to her creator after a long and impactful life. Kay was predeceased by her husband David Squires, daughter Jan Paulette, and sister Dorothy Wilkes. Kay and her beloved sister Dorothy were raised by their Scottish grandparents after being orphaned at an early age.Kay learned to play violin while attending Norwalk High School where she graduated in 1940. Her passion for music opened many doors in her life including a chair in the Norwalk symphony orchestra. She attended Arnold College in New Haven CT., receiving a teaching degree in physical education.She earned her master’s degree at NYU while continuing to work in Greenwich Village. In addition to this, she contributed to the WWII effort by working in a munitions factory. Before marring and starting a family she taught P.E. and coached in the Norwalk school system. Catherine was married in the spring of 1953 to her high school classmate, David Disbrow Squires. While raising four children, the family resided in South Norwalk until 1968 when they moved to Westport, CT. While raising her family, she continued to work part time in the Westport school systemas a substitute teacher as well as an assistant in special needs classrooms. She was always a loyal participant in musical programs that were hosted at the Lithgow Public Library, as well as St. Mark’s home in August Maine. During her stay at the Augusta Rehab Center she loved to get others involved in the various activities that they held. An avid traveler, Kay was proud to have been to 49 of the 50 United States, her last trips (at age 90) were to California to visit relatives and Alaska to ride the rails. When asked recently by one of her grandchildren - what truths she has learned in 92 years, she replied… “Love - I guess and don’t ever lose your sense of humor” Kay’s infectious love of life, people and music has been passed on to her children and grandchildren. Catherine leaves behind: Her son Scott and familyin Phoenix, AZ (Vera, Owen and Wyatt) Her son David and familyin Westport, CT (Arlene, Leah, Matthew, and Daniel) Her daughter Martha and family in Windsor, ME (Tom, Danny, Kate)
