Obituary of Randall Mark Varnum
SEDGWICK - Randall Mark Varnum, 55, passed away at Blue Hill Hospital after several years of declining health on May 1, 2015, with his loving wife and daughter at his side. He was the beloved son of Donald and Sheila Varnum, being born December 31, 1959, at Castine Hospital.
Randy grew up in Holden Me., attending local schools and graduating from Brewer High School in 1979. He learned to hunt, fish and do all out-of-door things with his father and grandfather.
Soon after graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard serving honorably and with distinction for 10 years. He was the honor graduate of his Basic Military class. After attending MK school, he was assigned to the USCGC Tamaroa, being both an engine mechanic and a member of the boarding team, enforcing marine law and drug interdiction duties. Other assignments during his career include, Seguin Island Lighthouse and Southwest Harbor Coast Guard Station. He was awarded USCG Commendation Medal w/"O" device, Mertiorious Unit Commendation Medal and a number of other ribbons in recognition of his performance and service.
Randy was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, and a loyal friend. He was courageous, daring, fiercely conservative, unabashedly patriotic, and stubborn to a fault. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, telling stories, entertaining everyone with his wit, ability to imitate other people and watching cartoons with granddaughter, Anika Joy.
He is survived by his parents; wife, Lauri; daughter, Victoria Lerback and husband, Daniel; and granddaughter, Anika Joy Varnum; a sister, Lori Parenteau, her husband, Richard, and their children, Amanda and Alexander; uncles, Royce Varnum, wife, Margery, and their son, Cody and his wife, Missy, Rodney Pettengill and wife, Raina, and William Pettengill and wife, Joan; aunts, Loraine Dolly and Betty Dill; sisters-in-law, Carolee Starkey and Kelly Bushey; brother-in-law, David Nisbett; many nieces, nephews, stepgrandchildren and great-stepgrandchildren.
As he entered eternal afterlife, he was greeted by Gramp and Grammie Varnum; Gump and Nana Pettengill; Grammie Jo, Roy Nisbett, Uncle Diggie; and friends, Jack Billings, Tony D'auria and John Medello.
The family wishes to thank all his friends for their help and support during his trying times, including Basil Friend, Craig and David Dyer, Craig Wood, Bill Smith, Alex Turner and all the crew at Belfast Boat Company, Peter Haddock, former owner of Mathews Brothers and many too numerous too mention.
