Obituary of George W. Noyes

George William Noyes, 86, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle, passed away May 10, 2015, at Mount Desert Island Hospital following a brief illness. The son of Esther (Linnell) Noyes and William W. Noyes, he was born in Mars Hill, ME on November 25, 1928. During his high-school years at Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln ME, George played the tenor saxophone in the band and was a middle-distance runner on the track team. After graduating in 1947, he served stateside in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. After dabbling in sales, George was apprenticed by his cousin Charles Noyes into the plumbers union, where he became a master plumber and steamfitter. Since 1958, George was a proud member of the UA Local 716, Maine Plumbers and Pipefitters Union. George is predeceased by his first wife of 58 years, Sylvia G. Noyes. Married in 1953, they moved to Brewer, ME where they raised their four beloved daughters, Mary N. Cloutier (Manchester, ME), Amy N. Earickson (Waterville, ME), Julie G. Noyes (S. Portland, ME) and Nancy N. Coumou (Fremont, CA). He is survived by his daughters, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Additionally, George is survived by his dear wife Eleanor “Ellie” Noyes. Married in 2012, they enjoyed visiting family in Maine and Pennsylvania and trips to coastal towns throughout Maine. They had a great time on their honeymoon trip, a bus tour to Branson, MO, where George led his fellow bus riders in hymn-singing. George was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church. He loved hymns, and sang them all the time. In church it was a special joy to hear his beautiful, clear bass voice. When she was a young child his daughter Mary wondered why her dad wasn’t a famous singer because he sang just as well as Dean Martin did. George was a member of the Bar Harbor chapter of the American Legion as well as the Franklin Maine Veterans Club. George was a terrific story-teller and, as many friends and family members can attest, he was also a skilled and uncannily lucky cribbage player. A celebration life will occur at the Franklin United Methodist church on Sunday, May 17 at 11:30 am with a luncheon to follow. Arrangements are under the care of Direct Cremation of Maine, Belfast.
