Obituary of George A. Merritt

Medway and Hudson – George “Alvin” Merritt Sr., 76, passed away on August 5, 2015 at home surrounded by family after battling with leukemia. He was born January 10, 1939, to George & Ethel (Clark) Merritt. Alvin was self-employed as a furnace man, plumber & carpenter his entire life in the Katahdin Region. Alvin enjoyed growing his garden & had many fond memories of the annual fishing trip with the gang to Chamberlin and Eagle Lake each Spring. Alvin is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Carol (DiCentes) Merritt, three sons George “Alvin” Merritt Jr. of Bangor and his friend, Ruth, Danny Merritt and wife Ronda of Macwahoc, Dino Merritt and wife Geneva of Lugoff, SC, two daughters, Dody Runnells and husband Andy of Hudson and Debbie Merritt and partner Kevin Doyle of Medway. 11 grandchildren: Kurstin, Kira, Sonny, Shana, Erica, Wendi, Neil, Robin, Travis, Natasha & Tyler & 17 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Gloria O’Donal, & husband John of Winn. Alvin was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Charles Merritt & Douglas Merritt and three sisters, Geneva Merritt, Beverly Smith & Bertha McGowan. Special thanks to Dr. Pat Kenaley & staff at Brewer Medical Center, Dr. Rao & staff at St. Joseph Hospital and Dr. Garrett & staff at Cancer Care of Maine for the excellent care that they all provided.
