Obituary of Donald Lewis Hinkley
FARMINGDALE - On Friday, August 7, 2015, Donald Hinkley Sr. passed away peacefully at his Farmingdale home. "Donnie" was comforted during his passing by his son and daughter-in-law Don Jr. and Mary Hinkley, and his devoted life partner of several years, Joanne Jerrier.
At the age of 17, Donnie left high school to dutifully serve with the Marine Corps and later, after discharge and a few jobs, went back to his former high school to obtain his diploma. Donnie wore many career hats; some notable jobs he held were in corn and shoe shops, and he worked as a cook and as a corrections officer. Donnie was also no stranger to creating and managing various businesses, with his main focus on antiques and auctioneering. With an Auctioneering License, which was years later proudly hung in his home on display, Donnie owned and operated two auction barns in Beans Corner and in Farmington behind a mini mall.
Donnie also worked for other auction houses and, in addition, provided benefit auctions for special causes. Donnie had a kind heart and was a member and volunteer of many organizations such as the VFW, American Legion, Elks Club, and the Togus VA hospital.
Donnie is survived by his brother David, of Jay; his son Don Jr Hinkley and wife Mary, of Winthrop; his step daughter Peggy Smith, of Wilton; several grand and great grandchildren, and his life partner Joanne. Donnie will be missed by his family, dear friends, special friends that were like family and very special children and a neighbor who visited him frequently.
Per request by Donnie, no funeral will be held; a private burial service is currently being scheduled. You may contact Joanne or Direct Cremation of Maine for more information.
