Obituary of Conrad W. Babb

EAST VASSALBORO - Conrad W. Babb passed away September 10, 2015 at Togus Springs with his family by his side. He was born in East Vassalboro July 30, 1934, son of Altha and Hermalean (McCaron) Babb. He was educated in Vassalboro schools and attended Waterville Senior High School and Higgins Classical Institute before earning his GED in 1953. He served five years in the US Navy from 1953-58 with the rank of MM-1 Petty Officer First Class. He received special training at the Naval Machinist School in Great Lake, Illinois. He served aboard the USS Grand Canyon, the USS Vessole and the USS Owen in the Mediterranean theater and North Atlantic. After his discharge, he worked at Coe Chevrolet in Augusta and the Stone Steel Company of Augusta until he began serving as acting postmaster at the East Vassalboro Post Office in 1966. In 1968, he was appointed postmaster of that office by President Lyndon B Johnson. After Conrad retired from the Postal Service in 1992, he owned and operated Babb's Sand and Gravel in East Vassalboro until earlier this year when he became ill. On March 12, 1983, he married Janet (Boulette). They enjoyed traveling, camping trips with the motorcycle, boating, first on Moosehead Lake and later on the coast of Maine in the summer. In the winter, they escaped the cold of Maine and made their home in Englewood, Florida where they savored the warmth and sunshine. Conrad was always anxious to return to Maine in the spring to get his equipment ready for the start of working season. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and loved spending time with his family. He also enjoyed the time he spent with his friends at Freddie's. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a special sister-in-law, Barbara (Boulette) Malia of Auburn. Besides his wife, he is survived by his only son, Jody Babb of Winslow; the daughter of his heart, Jessica Lint of Vassalboro; his beloved grandson, Zachary Costello of Waterville; three dear granddaughters: Savannah Babb of Palermo, Tori Babb of Winslow, Rylee Lint of Vassalboro; and two great-grandchildren: Bayleigh Gorman of Vassalboro and Jayden Mcgee of Palermo. He will also be missed by his brother-in-law, Tom Malia of Leeds; several nieces and nephews and two step-daughters: Cathy (Giroux) Wells of Waterville and Mary (Giroux) Knox of Fairfield. At his request, there will be no funeral services. A private burial will be held at Friends Cemetery in East Vassalboro. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of his life that will take place at the VFW in Winslow on September 26 from 11:00 am-2:00 pm. The family would like to express our sincere appreciation to the staff at MaineGeneral Medical Center and Togus Springs for the compassionate care he received in his final days.
