Obituary of Howard E. Glidden
Howard E. Glidden, 83, of Palermo passed away on Friday, September 11, 2015 at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Augusta. Howard was born in Mechanics Falls on May 26, 1932, the son of Inez and Ernest Glidden. He graduated from Erskine Academy and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He married Betty L. Tibbetts of Palermo in 1957 and together they had 4 children. Howard was a long time resident of Palermo and served as Selectman from 1968 - 1985 and again from 1987 - 1997. He served as a town Assessor from 1968 - 2005. He was a long time member of the Sheepscot Lake Fish and Game and also served a term as their president. Howard was best known in Palermo as a well loved bus driver for the Palermo Consolidated School. He started driving the bus in 1971 and did not retire until he was diagnosed with early Alzheimer’s in 2009. He also worked many years as a custodian at the school and was previously employed at the Statler Pulp Mill in Augusta.
Along with his wife, Betty, he enjoyed gardening and working in his greenhouse at Lily Cove Farm. Howard and Betty sold vegetables at their farm for many years and were well known by summer residents too. They also went on many great adventures, traveling to Hawaii, Alaska, the Panama Canal and Costa Rica, England, Scotland, and Ireland.
Howard is survived by his wife, Betty T. Glidden of Palermo, his son Rodny Glidden and his wife Jane of Palermo, his daughter Rebecca Glidden and her life partner Tom LaFreniere of Freedom, his daughter Patricia Maillet and her husband Tom of Palermo, his daughter Susan Leary and her husband Frank of Palermo, his grandchildren Zachary Glidden and his wife Kathryn of Lincoln, Aaron Glidden and his wife Kim of Vassalboro, Samuel Glidden and his wife Elena with their newborn son from Pennsylvania, Elizabeth Glidden, Paige Leary, Kelby Leary, Braden Maillet, and Cameron Maillet all of Palermo and his great granddaughters, Kaylene and Adalyn Glidden of Vassalboro, a brother Roger Glidden of Palermo, sister-in-laws Elsie T. Adams of Palermo, and Beryl T. Glidden of Vassalboro, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Harlan E. Glidden.
There will be a graveside service on Sunday, September 20th at the Cross Hill Cemetery in Vassalboro at 2pm with a reception to follow at the Sheepscot Lake Fish and Game, 1579 Route 3, Palermo (across from the farm).
