Obituary of Wilfred Belanger

Wilfred “Fred” Belanger – WINSLOW – Fred Belanger, age 90, died peacefully Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at Togus VA Hospice Unit. Fred was born in Fairfield, February 20th, 1925 the son of John and Aurelia Belanger. Fred was predeceased by his brother Harold Belanger as well as daughter Terri Belanger-Duley and his son John Belanger. He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Jeannine Belanger, his sister Marilyn Longstaff, his son Scott Belanger and wife Kelley, his daughter Carol Lagassey and partner Mike “Steve” Moore. He also leaves his five grandchildren: Peter Duley II, Korey Belanger, Sophie Belanger, Allie Lagassey, Terry Lagassey, and his great-granddaughter Quin Belanger. Fred graduated from Lawrence High School in 1944 where he excelled in football and baseball. He then joined the U.S Navy and served as a quarter master on the USS Camberra in the South Pacific during World War II. Upon returning from the service, he attended Colby College. Fred began his lifelong business career as a grocer with his brother Harold. He then went on to open many successful seafood restaurants including Fred’s Drive In in Fairfield and his last restaurant, The Sea Basket in Wiscasset where he enjoyed his passion of perfecting his seafood recipes such as his lobster stew. After retiring, he spent many happy hours with his grandchildren. Fred will be remembered for his passion for cooking and the love for his family. The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to all the staff at Togus VA, especially the hospice staff for their compassion, love, and hard work. A service will be held at the NEW Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel on 163 Mt. Vernon Road in Augusta, Maine 04330 on Friday November 20th at 9am.
