Obituary of Joan G Van Horn

AUGUSTA - Joan G. Van Horn, 84, of Augusta died on Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at MaineGeneral, surrounded by her family. She was born on May 8, 1932, at Augusta General Hospital, the daughter of Blanche A. Grenier Courtemanche and George Vincent Courtemanche. She attended Augusta schools achieving her G.E.D. in 1971. She married Leon A. Van Horn in 1948, raised four children, and lived in their original home for 65 years. She was employed by the City of Augusta, working at the Augusta Civic Center. She was a charter and life member of the Maine Numismatic Association, a member of the Cushnoc Seniors Club and Spectrum Seniors. She enjoyed making rosaries for the Rosary Makers of Augusta, porcelain dolls, ceramics, knitting, and crocheting, but most of all, dancing. She, along with her sisters and cousins, traveled to Europe, Russia, the Caribbean, and Tahiti. She spent much of her free time enjoying her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Leon; her parents, and one sister. She is survived by her children Linda V. Cobb of Manchester, Leon S. Van Horn of Sidney, Carolyn J. Van Horn of Manchester, and Norman A. Van Horn and his wife Beverly of Sidney; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lorraine Chamberlain of California and Patsy Viglione of Florida; a sister-in-law, Sarah S. Hale of Arden, Ontario; a brother-in-law, Rev. Daniel J. Shute of Montreal, Quebec; several nieces, nephews, and cousins, two of whom were especially close: Connie Tracy of Sidney and Roger Jean of Augusta. Joan's family would like to extend a special thank you to the Hospice Care Staff at MaineGeneral for the support and care. A private burial service will be held at a later date.
