Obituary of George Gorham Rowan

George Gorham Rowan, Jr., beloved husband of Patricia Mann Rowan, died April 18, 2019 at Quarry Hill, Camden, Maine of Alzheimer’s disease. Born September 7, 1927 in Norwalk, Connecticut to Edna Bradbury Rowan and George Gorham Rowan, Sr. he graduated from Norwalk High School in 1945 and Bates College in 1949 with an Economics degree. Employed by F.A.G. Bearings, Stamford, Connecticut; retired as Treasurer after a 32 year career. George was a kind and humble man of few words, a choir director and organist at the United Church of Rowayton for almost 30 years. He was a lifelong member of the American Guild of Organists, and enjoyed biking and was passionate about cars. George was often heard asking, “how many miles on your car?” and “what year is it?” George and Patricia were married on October 18, 1957 at the Baptist Church, now the home of the United Church of Rowayton. George and Patricia were among the founding members of the Roton Point Club, where they were nightly fixtures in the grove, picnicing, dancing on the porch and being timers at a decade of swim meets. In addition to his wife Patricia, he is survived by his three children, Douglas Edward Rowan, San Francisco, Carol Rowan (Deb Gross) of Washington, D.C. and Nobleboro, Maine, and Jane Marie Windell (James), Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; two grandchildren Jonathan George Blough and his fiancé Jenna Michelle Donahue, Chicago, IL and Grace Rowan Palos and her husband Heath of Sydney, AU. He is also survived by two brothers Eugene Rowan, Rowayton, CT. and Harry Rowan and his wife, Judy of Dallas, Texas; three nieces, Cynthia Jones, Linda Rogers and Wendy Rowan and one nephew Andrew Rowan. His sister Janet Rowan predeceased him. A memorial service is being planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the Bates College Choir Fund.
