Obituary of Dorothy Doble
Dorothy A. “Dot” (Foley) Doble of Portland, ME passed away peacefully at home December 17, 2018. Born in Portland, she was the daughter of Louis and Anna (Owen) Foley. She attended St. Dominic’s and Cathedral schools. She married and had six children; she loved being a mother and instilled in her children the importance of helping those less fortunate. While raising a family, she was a CNA and later an operator for New England Telephone for many years, retiring in 1988. During her retirement she became a foster grandparent at Riverton and Hall schools.
Show business was a true passion of Dot’s from a young age, when she and her parents would often travel cross country by train to see television and theatrical shows. Her cousin was even a stand-in for actress Joan Blondell in many of her films. She was the “self-proclaimed #1 fan of singer Glen Campbell”. Her persistence of getting what she wanted made it possible to go backstage with three of her young children at one of his concerts to meet him, which was one of the many thrills of her life. Her love of travel took her to many places including Ireland, Bermuda, the Caribbean, California, and New York City. Yard sales, fairs, trips to the ocean and fried clams at Ken’s Place were some of her other joys. She was a voracious reader, loved crosswords and almost any type of trivia. Dot will always be remembered for her spirited sense of humor, kindness and “Nannieisms”.
Dot was predeceased by her former husband Bob, sister Marie, and best friend Rita. She is survived by all of her six children: Robert F. Doble Jr., Brian L. Doble, David J. Doble, John T. Doble, Suzanne M. Cardilli and husband Mark, and Mary-Jane Stephenson; “Nannie’s” grandchildren: Kristopher R. Stephenson and partner Michele, Alexis J. Stephenson, Mark Cardilli Jr., Chelsey M. Cardilli, Nicole L. Cook, and Russell J.M. Libby and his wife Kathleen; great-grandchildren: Harper J. Stephenson, Corey J. Libby, Jordan R. Libby, Tyler J. Libby and Atlas S.M. Libby. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Dot’s family would like to thank Dr Phyllidia Ku-Ruth, Northern Light Home Care & Hospice and HomePartners for their exemplary care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Association Maine Chapter in Scarborough and Dempsey Center in South Portland. Service will be private. A celebration of Dot’s life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the care of Direct Cremation of Maine.
